ENGAGEMENT RING STYLE GUIDE

INTRODUCTION TO ENGAGEMENT RING SETTINGS

Choosing an engagement ring is a big decision. It is a piece that she will wear for the rest of her life and will likely be one of the most expensive pieces of jewelry she will own. There are many choices to make in selecting the ring, such as style, diamond size, metal, and setting. Each decision will affect the look of the ring in a different way. Luckily, you can rely on our engagement ring style guide from our experts at Kirk Jewelers to help you sort through those choices.

SOLITAIRE RINGS

Solitaire engagement rings are one of the most popular and most traditional style choices available. This straightforward look is both understated and stunningly beautiful while maintaining its status as a timeless classic. Historically this style consists of a single center stone on an unadorned shank, which often allows for more financial resources available for a larger, higher quality diamond. Modern takes on this look include creative details such as pave stones along the side of the band, delicate scrollwork, or detailed engraving.

SIDE STONE RINGS

Side stone rings are similar to solitaire rings but have the addition of dazzling diamonds along either side of the center stone. The side stones not only help draw attention to the center stone but also add a supporting sparkle across the band. With this design, the setting of the side stones greatly impacts the overall look. The most popular setting choices are prong (also known as claw), channel, or pave settings. Prong has a more cathedral look with the curved metal holding the stone, while a channel setting has the gem locked in line with the metal of the shank, and pave stones look like droplets attached to the band.

HALO RINGS

Halo rings are big on romance and vibrance. In these exquisite rings, a center stone is prominently displayed atop a crown of tiny diamonds that work as a pedestal, presenting the center stone for all to see. Halos come in a variety of styles in addition to the traditional look. Double halos feature two collars of diamonds for a shimmering effect. Hidden halos lift the center stone from underneath and give a spectacular appearance when viewed from the side.

THREE STONE RINGS

Three stone rings offer a symbolic connection for the bride who appreciates a ring that carries deep meaning. In this style, there are three large stones which can also be accompanied by smaller side stones for additional sparkle. Each of the three larger stones represents a specific part of the bride and groom’s love story—one each for the past, present, and future. The center stone is sometimes larger than the two smaller stones flanking it. This style allows for a great deal of creativity in the way of different sizes, cuts, and types of stones.
