In this installment, we’re chatting with Allison Strongin and Jeff Newbauer, co-presidents of Kirk Jewelers in Miami. During the post-war boom, Julian Newbauer Sr. moved to Miami from New York City and expanded his business. His descendants have been tending to the family business for over 70 years now, and the pair offers some insight that I found noteworthy: “While we are aware of the insatiable demand for professional steel watches, we are recently seeing a tremendous interest in all-gold pieces. Great examples are the Rolex Submariner in yellow gold or the Rolex Daytona with green dial.”
That’s exactly the kind of watch I’d wear if I lived in Miami.
Everyone has a creation story. What’s yours?
In 1947, our grandfather, Julian Newbauer Sr., decided to expand our family’s diamond wholesale business from New York City to Miami. Rather than using his last name, he decided to name the business after his nickname, Kirk. With his retail store in bustling Downtown Miami, his desire was to bring customers quality merchandise and the best possible service. Now, four generations later, my brother Jeff Newbauer and I are responsible for the business.
After over 70 years in Downtown Miami, Kirk Jewelers is very proud to still be family-owned and operated by the Kirk Family.
We just opened our new store at Brickell City Centre in the heart of downtown’s business and financial district – about 50% larger than the previous store. The bigger space has allowed us to give Rolex and Patek Philippe a greater presence within our store. We have also expanded our jewelry selection, adding new brands such as Phillips House, Miansai, and our very own Kirk Signature and Kirk Couture collections.
The new space is very welcoming with plenty of areas to sit and relax, which is wonderful to welcome our customers … once the virus lockdown is over. We are looking forward to the time when we will see our customers back in the store!
How has Kirk Jewelers been supporting the watch community?
This is an interesting question. Speaking more from a philosophical perspective, one of the biggest issues these days I hear from new clients is frustration that the most coveted timepieces are often being flipped on the secondary market. People are on waiting lists all over, yet somehow, these watches are being sold over and over to others making a business of “watch collecting”. We are very concerned with this problem. Getting to know our clients on a very personal level, knowing their existing collections, interests, distastes, etc., and then offering unique pieces tailored to them is most important in keeping these watches out of the second-hand flippers market. I feel we’re supporting the watch community by always maintaining a respect for the market and our most passionate enthusiasts’ interests. I find that our clients appreciate this process and care for the bigger picture.
What watches do you carry that folks should be paying attention to right now?
While we are aware of the insatiable demand for professional steel watches, we are recently seeing a tremendous interest in all-gold pieces. Great examples are the Rolex Submariner in yellow gold or the Rolex Daytona with green dial.
After years of only large watch sizes for women being popular, we are noticing women interested in more sizing options with their personal collections. In addition to their larger watches, we are noticing a trend towards more medium-sized timepieces – i.e. the Rolex Datejust in 31mm. And for those who still love a larger size, we have been very excited about the launch of the new Patek Philippe Twenty-4 models, which have received wonderful feedback.
What do you specialize in?
Simply put, I feel we offer the best brands in a warm and friendly environment. Kirk Jewelers is proud to be an authorized, official retailer for Rolex since 1958 and for Patek Philippe since 1961. Our new location at Brickell City Centre highlights exclusive salons for both brands which allow watch enthusiasts a cool and relaxed hangout to talk and enjoy this horological passion we all share. In addition, we carry Tudor, all sorts of watch accessories, and we will also soon offer a state-of-the-art in-house watchmaking facility.
As an expression of Kirk Jewelers’ philosophy, we chose the word genuine to best represent what we’re about. Genuine embodies the unwavering business ethics and our focus on providing the highest level of client service. Genuine reflects the passion deeply ingrained in our family’s tradition as well as signifying that we only offer authentic, factory-backed watches and jewelry.
How can customers and those interested in purchasing a watch connect with you?
On January 1 this year, we opened our new boutique at Brickell City Centre – only to temporarily close 2 ½ months later due to COVID-19.
Since then, we are continually in touch with clients through our Concierge Service at Kirk@kirkjewelers.com. While we may not be able to be together physically for the time being, we are connected via email, phone, and video chat, vowing to always provide the genuine experience our customers know and love from Kirk Jewelers. After all, there are still milestones, birthdays, and special occasions to celebrate!
